Interestingly, both Margaret and Ben’s mother share a common background as Englishwomen who moved to America after marrying Americans. In 2016, Ben joined Kuhlman Corporation, initially working in Yards 1 and 4 before assuming his current role as Outside Sales Representative – Trucking.

Ben’s personal life is as rich and fulfilling as his professional journey. At just 15 years old, while working at the former Ranch Steak and Seafood in Oregon, he crossed paths with Crystal, who, they were both surprised to learn, was a classmate from Clay High School. Their immediate connection blossomed into a lasting relationship. After high school, they lived in an apartment above a music store where Ben worked and honed his guitar-building skills.

Today, Ben and Crystal are proud parents to two amazing daughters: Madison and Gracey. With Crystal’s loving guidance, both daughters flourished through homeschooling. Currently, Ben is pursuing an Associate’s Degree in Technical Studies at BGSU Firelands, a satellite campus of Bowling Green State University, furthering his passion for learning.

In addition to his academic pursuits, Ben nurtures a keen interest in writing, dreaming of one day authoring his own book. As a self-described fidgeter, he enjoys collecting and organizing his nearly 1 million baseball cards, diving into true-crime mysteries, and indulging in video games. “People may be surprised by how few close friends I have,” suspects Ben. “As busy as I am, I prefer to spend my free time with family.”

While he has stepped away from playing and building guitars, Ben continues to own and operate Gracey’s Vintage Finishes, which sells specialty guitar paint to everyone from first-time builders to large-scale manufacturers. Both Madison’s Music Store and Gracey’s Vintage Finishes were named after his daughters, reflecting a deep sense of personal connection and passion. Although his focus has shifted, he still enjoys collecting vintage guitars, which keeps his passion for music alive.

From Steel to Safety

With aspirations of becoming an architect, Joe started working full-time right after high school. While employed at a steel processing plant in Perrysburg, he was tasked by his boss with documenting safety procedures for an upcoming OSHA inspection. That pivotal assignment, which led to Joe becoming an assistant to the plant’s safety director, prompted him to shift his educational focus to Environmental Health and Safety (EHS).

After earning an Associate’s Degree from Owens Community College, Joe began his career at First Solar as an entry-level Environmental Health and Safety professional. While working there, he attended the University of Findlay, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Health and Safety Management. His hard work and dedication propelled him through the ranks, and in 12 years, he was managing all of First Solar’s safety programs worldwide. However, with young children at home, the frequent travel and time away from his family began to take a toll on him.

Joe is someone who follows his instincts and has confidence in himself. So, when O-I recruited him, he decided to accept an EHS position that involved significantly less travel. Five years later, he followed his gut again, launching his own firm, St. John EHS Consulting, with The Gerken Companies as his first major client.

“We had several large contracts, and the company kept growing,” says Joe. But soon, his passion for safety became overshadowed by the challenges of running a business. “My role became that of a business manager rather than the EHS work that I love.”

With its employee ranks growing through the additions of Kuhlman Corporation and M&R Ready Mix, The Gerken Companies offered Joe a full-time position as Environmental Health and Safety Director. Tyne’s story begins in Napoleon, the town where she was born and raised. Growing up in a family with a rich equestrian heritage, Tyne can hardly remember a time when horses weren’t a part of her life. Her parents established a small horse boarding facility, and family vacations often revolved around trail-riding adventures. As a result, Tyne quickly became immersed in competitive equestrian events.

“I was on horses before I could walk,” Tyne reminisces, highlighting her lifelong connection with the animals. She began competing in equestrian events at a very young age. Participating in lead line activities, where a young rider sits on a horse while an adult handler leads the horse by a rope, helped her build confidence and develop basic skills.

Before long, Tyne became actively involved in northwest Ohio’s equestrian community. She participated in events such as the All-American Youth Horse Show, and her high school team clinched two state championships and was the two-time reserve state champs. However, the pandemic interrupted her participation in such events, as it did for many in the equestrian community.

Tyne’s professional journey began humbly; she started working part-time mowing grass at The Gerken Companies while still in high school. Her interest in math, bolstered by a teacher’s encouraging advice, guided her toward a career in accounting. Her innate curiosity about the asphalt she was rolling led to a pivotal shift in her career in 2003. Eager to deepen her understanding, Cheryl obtained her nuclear operator certification, a prerequisite for the Level-1 technician designation, on her own. That helped pave the way for her transition to an asphalt lab technician role in 2010.

As an asphalt lab technician, Cheryl’s responsibilities are critical to ensuring the quality, safety, and durability of asphalt materials. From checking density to conducting Hot Mix Asphalt tests, her expertise is vital to meeting regulatory standards set by organizations such as the EPA, ODOT, and MDOT. Her ODOT Certified Level 3 (Asphalt Concrete Mix Design) qualification speaks volumes about her capabilities, allowing her to perform advanced testing and manage lab operations effectively.

Noah Blankenship grew up in Archbold, Ohio, in a typical suburban family with two working parents and a sister. He attended Archbold High School, where he ran track and cross-country. “Running was the one sport I was good at; I was fast and could run in a straight line,” he jokes. During his junior and senior years, Noah attended the Four County Career Center, where he gained valuable skills that would benefit him in the future.

After high school, Noah enrolled at Northwest State Community College to pursue a degree in criminal justice. Driven by his passion for hunting and fishing, he aspired to become a Department of Natural Resources (DNR) officer. However, his early career took an unexpected turn when he took on jobs making deliveries for Fulton Lumber and working in carpentry at Schuette Construction. It was during this time that Noah developed a passion for the construction industry, which would eventually lead him to his current role.

An Unexpected Path

In April 2021, a fortunate discovery changed the course of Noah’s career. He stumbled upon The Gerken Companies’ career page online and applied for a position at the truck washing center. That initial role paved the way for his eventual transition into quality control at M&R Ready Mix, Inc., where he now thrives.

In his current position, Noah focuses on two main aspects: quality control and customer service. His work involves considerable behind-the-scenes effort, including making adjustments and conducting pre-pour meetings to ensure everything runs smoothly.

“Concrete changes daily, so we are always testing,” he explains. “Experience is what sets Gerken apart in the ready-mix business. While some companies might have just one or two certified testers, we have three quality control technicians, a quality control manager, and a quality control technical salesperson. All our field managers hold ACI field-testing certifications, and more positions are getting certified every day.”

As one of the first people to arrive at the plant, Noah is responsible for loading and testing the first truck. His role extends to the job sites, where he collaborates closely with third-party testers and acts as a crucial liaison between M&R and project contractors. “I get to work with a lot of wonderful people,” Noah says, expressing gratitude for his coworkers. “The drivers, batchmen, and loaders are all great—not just here at work, but as part of our community.”

Beyond the technicalities of his work, Noah takes immense pride in the projects M&R has completed. “I love pointing out to friends the projects we’ve been part of,” he adds.

Personal Life

Outside of work, Noah and his wife, Madison, are looking forward to celebrating their third anniversary in June. They cherish their roles as parents to their two-year-old daughter, Phoebe. Their family enjoys traveling, and they have fond memories of their honeymoon in Europe, where Madison affectionately teased Noah about his fixation on the local concrete trucks.

Noah’s hobbies are equally rooted in his love for the outdoors, including golf, hunting, and fishing. A long-time member of Pheasants Forever, he actively contributes to the organization’s mission of conserving wildlife through habitat improvements, public access, education, and conservation advocacy.

Interestingly, Noah is open about his personal journey with social anxiety, often feeling nervous around new acquaintances. “But once I get past the initial meeting, I talk their legs off,” he jokes, showcasing his warm and approachable personality.

“Some clients seem skeptical when I arrive driving my M&R Ready Mix truck,” says Spence Miller. “But their initial impressions quickly change once they see what I can accomplish.”

Spence’s journey to prove himself began early. At just two years old, he faced an unexpected challenge: a childhood accident resulted in him losing part of his arm. Rather than letting this define him, Spence chose to move forward, refusing to dwell on an incident that could have held him back.

“Some people ask me, ‘Why are you working? You should be on disability,” he reflects. “But I’ve never considered myself disabled.” Growing up on a dairy farm, his parents instilled in him values emphasizing equality and hard work. They treated him the same as his siblings, even when it came to sharing chores, which set a strong foundation for his resilience.

In high school, Spence continued to challenge perceptions of limitations by participating in sports—baseball, football, and wrestling. The stigma of disability never deterred him; instead, it fueled his determination to prove that limitations exist only if we allow them to.

“To me, disability is a mindset,” he says. “I never used having one arm as a crutch.” That perspective has not only shaped his personal journey but also the way he navigates life and work, inspiring those around him to view challenges as opportunities.

Spence grew up on a dairy farm, where he learned to drive trucks and tractors. He still has the more than 200-acre farm, but today it is primarily a livestock operation.

A lifelong resident of Wauseon, Ohio, Spence attended Pike-Delta-York schools. In eighth grade, he met a charming seventh-grader named Karen. They began dating during their final years of high school and got married just six months after his graduation. This year, they proudly celebrate their 41st wedding anniversary.

Karen describes Spence as fearless, responsible, hardworking, and loving. The humble Spence says he is simply a family man who does whatever he can for his loved ones.

Cultivating a Strong Work Ethic

Spence’s first job was at Cook’s department store in Wauseon, where he handled a variety of tasks, from operating the cash register to running the loading dock. The experience laid a solid foundation for his work ethic. After that, he worked for S-W Mills, an alfalfa products supplier in Archbold.

Early in their marriage, Spence and his family embarked on a new adventure by relocating to Martha’s Vineyard, a picturesque island in Massachusetts, just south of Cape Cod. His older brother and a cousin were already living there and told him about a job opportunity at a gas station.

It was during this period that Spence first became involved in the ready-mix business, setting the stage for his future career. In 1990, after two years on the island, they moved back to Wauseon, and Spence began working for M&R Redi Mix Trucking in Pettisville.

“M&R trained me well,” reflects Spence, thankful for the supportive environment fostered by management and coworkers alike. “The people were very nice, and the owner valued everyone’s opinion.” The Gerken Companies acquired M&R in 2019 and renamed it M&R Ready Mix. “Gerken kept everyone, which we all appreciated greatly.”

Family Values

Beyond work, Spence leads a fulfilling personal life with his wife, two daughters, and three grandchildren. They cherish their time together, especially during winters in Florida and family visits in Tennessee. Additionally, they find joy in exploring theme parks and playing miniature golf. Spence also has a passion for tinkering with cars and farm equipment, which keeps him engaged in his leisure time.

Professionally, Spence enjoys being on the road, visiting longtime customers, and meeting new ones. The long hours do not bother him—he’s used to waking up at 3:30 a.m. to milk the cows. His commitment to building relationships complements his dedication to work; Spence explains that he tries to get along with everyone.

Many people might be surprised to learn that, despite having only one arm, Spence was an exceptional high school baseball player. His talent was so noteworthy that it caught the attention of the 1980s reality television show, That’s Incredible!, which filmed a segment about him during his junior year. Unfortunately, ABC canceled the show before his segment aired.

Ultimately, Spence’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance. While many would see only the challenges he has overcome, he sees opportunities for personal growth. He maintains a positive attitude and is willing to help anyone who needs it. His infectious spirit not only inspires those around him but also serves as a reminder that our limitations are often self-imposed.

Born in Trenton, Michigan, Suzette Adkins was the youngest of six children. Her father, an engineer at Ford with a passion for drag racing, shaped her childhood experiences. “A lot of my early childhood was spent at drag strips, watching my dad race his Pinto against some of the biggest legends in the sport,” she recalls, highlighting a love for vehicles and the open road that began early on. “I was his little sidekick.”

As her childhood progressed, her father’s interests evolved from racing to boating, yet his influence remained ever-present. After retiring, he devoted all his free time to restoring classic cars, including a 1932 Ford Victoria, a 1939 Mercury Coupe, and a 1966 Ford Fairlane 500—all of which he passed down to his children.

Despite his passing in 2015, Suzette carries her father’s spirit and lessons with her. She fondly remembers, “My dad used to brag to his friends that his baby daughter drove a truck,” a testament to the pride she feels in continuing his legacy.

A Journey of Resilience

With a Class A CDL in hand, a skill her late husband encouraged her to acquire, Suzette began her journey as a truck driver more than three decades ago. Together, she and her husband established a trucking company that once operated ten vehicles. However, in November 2003, tragedy struck when her husband passed away while heroically saving their 17-year-old son from drowning during a trip to Florida.

Faced with the daunting task of running their business alone in the aftermath of such a loss, Suzette navigated fierce competition and rising costs before ultimately deciding to close the company. Yet, her determination did not wane; she transitioned to working for a local airfreight company, proving time and again that she could adapt to various driving positions with resilience.

The day after her father passed away, Suzette was diagnosed with bladder cancer. Fortunately, doctors detected it very early, and surgery successfully removed the tumor. She has been cancer-free ever since.

In 2017, Suzette faced another significant hurdle when she underwent neck surgery that resulted in the loss of all function in her right arm. However, her unwavering determination shone through as she committed herself to rehabilitation, ultimately regaining 90 percent of her arm’s function. Her journey of recovery further underscores her grit and perseverance.

Embracing New Challenges

Throughout her career, Suzette found stability and connection in her work, which eventually led her to Bret, her current husband and coworker at The Gerken Companies. Now married for 15 years, the couple shares a life filled with love, support, and shared passions, including dirt-track racing, camping in their fifth-wheel trailer, and renting a condo in Marblehead, Ohio, each winter.

Recalling a pivotal moment, Suzette shares, “A few years ago, Bret told me that Gerken needed a driver for a live bottom dump truck, sometimes referred to as a flowboy, and he encouraged me to apply.” Now entering her fifth season with The Gerken Companies, she thrives in her role, relishing the opportunities to learn from her colleagues and immerse herself in the world of road construction.

Suzette acknowledges the significant support she has received from her fellow drivers at Gerken, who helped her learn “on the job” by teaching her everything that goes into building roads. They enjoy reminding her that she has switched to “working on this side of the barrels now,” a nod to her previous Load-to-Ride driving background.

“Working in infrastructure can be challenging, but Gerken is a company that truly supports its employees and understands the importance of self-care,” says Suzette. “No one has ever told me, ‘No, you can’t take a break, step out of the extreme heat, or hydrate.’ The fact that we all look out for one another is just one of the many reasons why I’m proud to be part of The Gerken Companies.”

Suzette encourages women considering a career to explore truck driving. “Driving a big rig down the road is very empowering,” she asserts, inviting other women to follow her path. “Things are not like they were 30 years ago, when you might have felt like a woman in a man’s world. My male colleagues are supportive, and Gerken readily hires women.”

Today, as Suzette reflects on her journey, she does so with pride and a deep sense of achievement. Each road she travels is a testament to her love for trucking and her indomitable spirit, strength, and tenacity. Shaped by her experiences and her father’s lessons, she continues to navigate the open roads with her head held high.
