However, his life took an exciting turn when he discovered his passion for Construction Systems Management (CMS), which ignited his enthusiasm for the construction industry. With a humorous touch, he reminisces about his classmates—many of whom were fellow veterans and non-traditional students—who helped create an engaging and relatable atmosphere that made his experience all the more rewarding.

This year, the Ohio Aggregates & Industrial Minerals Association (OAIMA) is celebrating the fifth anniversary of its Emerging Leaders Program. The annual initiative is dedicated to developing the industry’s future leaders by providing opportunities to network, deepen industry knowledge, gain geographic insights, hone leadership skills, and receive valuable mentorship through five engaging sessions. Participants come away equipped with essential training and resources to advance their careers. Gerken’s Jeff Hutchinson, Aggregate Plant Operator at Genoa Limestone, LLC, is enrolled in this year’s program.

Part of a recent session was hosted by The Custar Stone Co., where Jason Asmus, Joe Knepley, and Kevin Maassel shared their valuable insights and expertise with attendees. In addition to the informative discussions, participants toured the company’s new plant and wrapped up the session with an exciting blast demonstration.

The journey along Ohio State Route 66 is becoming smoother and more durable thanks to a significant paving and resurfacing project led by Bluffton Paving, Inc. Spanning an impressive 8.11 miles between Delphos and Spencerville in Allen County, this project includes a 0.2-mile overlap with State Route 81 and is utilizing the “echelon paving” method—a technique designed to enhance road longevity and reduce maintenance needs.

What is Echelon Paving?

Echelon paving is a cutting-edge method that allows for the simultaneous paving of adjacent lanes. By deploying two pavers at once, crews can work on both sides of the road. This approach not only speeds up the paving process but also creates a superior longitudinal joint in the center of the roadway since the asphalt is compacted while still hot. As a result, motorists can expect a smooth lane transition that enhances their driving experience.

“Echelon paving creates a more durable and low-maintenance road surface compared to traditional sequential lane paving,” explains Bluffton Paving Project Manager Michael Miller. “By eliminating the need for joint sealing during paving, we effectively reduce the ongoing crack sealing and repair work needed throughout the pavement’s life.”

The use of echelon paving techniques not only improves road durability but also prioritizes safety by reducing the interaction between construction activities and traffic. During the process, the entire section of road is closed to through traffic, significantly minimizing the risk to both motorists and our crews. It also helps alleviate driver confusion caused by numerous construction signs.

Despite its many benefits, the echelon paving method is not without its challenges. It requires the closure of multiple lanes at once and demands high-level coordination among crew members and area residents. “We hand out flyers to homeowners the day before paving their roadway sections to prevent them from being trapped in or out of their driveways,” says Michael. “We are completely blocking their access for about two hours as we pass by their properties.”

Additionally, the process involves employing several operational pavers, a coordinated fleet of dump trucks, and multiple roller crews, all working at the same time. Because of these complexities, echelon paving is typically performed by only the largest and most experienced contractors.
