Representing the Ohio Contractors Association (OCA), Mandy brought her passion for improved work zone safety to the forefront, urging Congress to bolster funding for research and to motivate states to prioritize worker protections on the road.

Following her participation in the TCC Fly-In, Mandy traveled to Columbus to testify in support of Ohio HB 82, the Trenton Gallaway Work Zone Safety Act. This essential piece of legislation aims to bolster Ohio’s work zone safety laws by increasing penalties for violations, enhancing driver education, improving signage, and allowing for flexible speed limits. At its heart, the bill’s main goal is to significantly reduce the risk of injuries and fatalities for both roadway workers and motorists.

The act’s name honors Trenton Gallaway, a young Ohio highway worker who tragically lost his life while performing road maintenance in Franklin Township. His story serves as a heartfelt reminder of the urgent need for stricter safety measures and heightened driver awareness.

“Work zone safety is about awareness, and we all play a part,” explains Mandy. “The more visibility we can bring to tragedies such as Trent, the more we can humanize our work and the people who do it.”

Empowering the Next Generation

Mandy’s 14-year-old daughter, Claire, an 8th grader at Bluffton Middle School, accompanied her mother to the TCC Fly-In in Washington. Claire has an interest in business, law, and politics, so Mandy thought it would be meaningful to her. Additionally, during previous hearings, Mandy has been asked whether Gerken has a next generation. The representatives acknowledged Claire’s presence and discussed how some of the issues we addressed would impact her generation.

“I feel it is really important that the next generation understands where things come from and how they are built, including the laws,” says Mandy. “We take so much for granted. But when you truly understand that there is a process behind everything and people who make it possible, it seems to garner more respect.”

This month, Stan Radabaugh and Matt Sommers had the opportunity to engage with the bright minds at Jerusalem Elementary School in Curtice, Ohio, through the Concrete Kits for Kids program. Over two weeks, Stan and Matt introduced the concepts of concrete and construction to 87 enthusiastic third-grade students.

During the first four days, the class explored the world of concrete, learning about its ingredients, the processes involved in its creation, and the fascinating science behind its many applications. The students absorbed every bit of the information, eagerly asking questions and engaging in discussions about the various concrete structures and items that they encounter daily.

A highlight of the sessions was when each student crafted their own concrete boat. Watching their faces light up as they mixed the ingredients and poured them into molds was truly rewarding. It’s one thing to learn about a subject, but engaging in hands-on activities ignites curiosity and creativity in children.

The following week, Stan and Matt returned for a follow-up session that included a video presentation and visits from mixer trucks driven by Loren Knipp of M&R Ready Mix, Inc., and Luba Stecca-Holtz of Kuhlman Corporation.

It was Luba who arranged this presentation at Jerusalem Elementary School, where her daughter, Harper, is a third-grader.

The best part of the event was when the students floated their concrete boats. Witnessing their creations buoyant in the water was a memorable experience for everyone involved.

Joining Stan and Matt were accounting interns Ethan Johnson and Aaron Ernsthausen, who provided additional support and enthusiasm. Their presence highlighted the diverse pathways available in construction.

Concrete Kits for Kids is more than just a fun activity; it’s an educational initiative organized by Ohio Concrete that travels across the state to teach children aged 3 to 13 about the concrete industry. The program aligns with STEM and STEAM curricula, providing a fun and engaging way for kids to explore building and construction science.

“It’s truly inspiring to think that workshops like these can foster an interest in the concrete industry among young learners,” shares Stan. “We can’t wait to bring this exciting learning experience to even more schools in the future.”

Cheryl began her career at The Gerken Companies in August 1992 as a heavy construction machinery operator. For 18 years, she honed her skills on the road, maneuvering various types of equipment and learning the nuances of the construction environment. Her innate curiosity about the asphalt she was rolling led to a pivotal shift in her career in 2003. Eager to deepen her understanding, Cheryl obtained her nuclear operator certification, a prerequisite for the Level-1 technician designation, on her own. That helped pave the way for her transition to an asphalt lab technician role in 2010.

As an asphalt lab technician, Cheryl’s responsibilities are critical to ensuring the quality, safety, and durability of asphalt materials. From checking density to conducting Hot Mix Asphalt tests, her expertise is vital to meeting regulatory standards set by organizations such as the EPA, ODOT, and MDOT. Her ODOT Certified Level 3 (Asphalt Concrete Mix Design) qualification speaks volumes about her capabilities, allowing her to perform advanced testing and manage lab operations effectively.

Cheryl’s journey not only highlights her personal growth but also reflects a significant evolution in the industry. She acknowledges the ever-changing nature of construction, where technology and regulations are continuously advancing. The dynamic environment means that schedules can often flip upside down, pushing professionals to adapt quickly. Family is important to Cheryl; she takes immense pride in her 36-year-old daughter and 30-year-old son, each of whom has given her two grandchildren.

Outside of work, Cheryl enjoys primitive camping off the grid. “A good campfire and some music can make the world go away,” she says. Many might not guess that Cheryl holds a brown belt in Hapkido, a martial art focused on real-world self-defense—a testament to her multifaceted character.

In addition to her personal interests, Cheryl actively participates in her community, volunteering with organizations such as Let’s Build Beds, which helps provide children in need with their own beds. “You would be surprised to learn how many teenagers living in homes have never had their own bed,” she says. Her dedication to helping others reflects her compassionate personality and strong sense of community.

The initiative, taking place in our Napoleon and Milan locations, provides optimal environments for K-9 teams to sharpen their tracking and location skills.

The OSHP has gained national recognition as a leader in criminal enforcement and drug interdiction, largely due to the effectiveness of its K-9 units. These furry partners are trained in various specialties, including narcotics detection, tracking, and explosive detection, and have proven to be invaluable resources in the ongoing fight against crime.

One of the most commendable aspects of the K-9 program is the extraordinary intuition and expertise these dogs bring to the field. Many of them are adept at locating evidence discarded from vehicles or dropped by suspects during foot pursuits. Beyond their role in apprehension, several K-9s also assist in the search for missing individuals, including vulnerable populations such as children and elderly persons who may wander away from safe surroundings.

The canine stars of this program are primarily Belgian Malinois and German Shepherds, known for their intelligence, agility, and strong work ethic. Lombardi says special credit goes to field leadership and crews, whose professionalism kept the projects moving despite the tight deadlines and significant scheduling coordination. “Their unwavering efforts truly reflect our core values at The Gerken Companies, where we consistently strive for precision and efficiency in everything we do,” he adds.

The City of Sandusky has scheduled a massive, multi-year rehabilitation project to expand the Cedar Point Causeway to five lanes, set to begin later this year.

Noah Blankenship grew up in Archbold, Ohio, in a typical suburban family with two working parents and a sister. He attended Archbold High School, where he ran track and cross-country. “Running was the one sport I was good at; I was fast and could run in a straight line,” he jokes. During his junior and senior years, Noah attended the Four County Career Center, where he gained valuable skills that would benefit him in the future.

After high school, Noah enrolled at Northwest State Community College to pursue a degree in criminal justice. Driven by his passion for hunting and fishing, he aspired to become a Department of Natural Resources (DNR) officer. However, his early career took an unexpected turn when he took on jobs making deliveries for Fulton Lumber and working in carpentry at Schuette Construction. It was during this time that Noah developed a passion for the construction industry, which would eventually lead him to his current role.

An Unexpected Path

In April 2021, a fortunate discovery changed the course of Noah’s career. He stumbled upon The Gerken Companies’ career page online and applied for a position at the truck washing center. That initial role paved the way for his eventual transition into quality control at M&R Ready Mix, Inc., where he now thrives.

In his current position, Noah focuses on two main aspects: quality control and customer service. His work involves considerable behind-the-scenes effort, including making adjustments and conducting pre-pour meetings to ensure everything runs smoothly.

“Concrete changes daily, so we are always testing,” he explains. “Experience is what sets Gerken apart in the ready-mix business. While some companies might have just one or two certified testers, we have three quality control technicians, a quality control manager, and a quality control technical salesperson. All our field managers hold ACI field-testing certifications, and more positions are getting certified every day.”

As one of the first people to arrive at the plant, Noah is responsible for loading and testing the first truck. His role extends to the job sites, where he collaborates closely with third-party testers and acts as a crucial liaison between M&R and project contractors. “I get to work with a lot of wonderful people,” Noah says, expressing gratitude for his coworkers. “The drivers, batchmen, and loaders are all great—not just here at work, but as part of our community.”

Beyond the technicalities of his work, Noah takes immense pride in the projects M&R has completed. “I love pointing out to friends the projects we’ve been part of,” he adds.

Personal Life

Outside of work, Noah and his wife, Madison, are looking forward to celebrating their third anniversary in June. They cherish their roles as parents to their two-year-old daughter, Phoebe. Their family enjoys traveling, and they have fond memories of their honeymoon in Europe, where Madison affectionately teased Noah about his fixation on the local concrete trucks.

Noah’s hobbies are equally rooted in his love for the outdoors, including golf, hunting, and fishing. A long-time member of Pheasants Forever, he actively contributes to the organization’s mission of conserving wildlife through habitat improvements, public access, education, and conservation advocacy.

Interestingly, Noah is open about his personal journey with social anxiety, often feeling nervous around new acquaintances. “But once I get past the initial meeting, I talk their legs off,” he jokes, showcasing his warm and approachable personality.

Statistics from the National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse are sobering. In 2023 alone, there were 818 fatal crashes in work zones, leading to 899 fatalities, including 176 pedestrians.
