The prestigious awards showcase Gerken Paving’s commitment to excellence in asphalt paving across multiple notable projects.

The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) has recognized Gerken Paving, Inc. with four 2025 Quality in Construction Awards for excellence in asphalt pavement construction.

“The asphalt pavement industry is resolute in its dedication to delivering projects of exceptional quality and performance for the traveling public,” said Pat Nelson, 2025 NAPA Chairman. “Each project honored with a Quality in Construction Award is rigorously evaluated against the highest industry standards, reflecting an unwavering commitment to excellence.”

Gerken Paving received awards for several notable projects:

US 24 Project: Located in Paulding and Defiance Counties, Ohio, this project involved rubblizing and overlaying 10.46 miles of US 24, part of the original “Fort to Port” project connecting Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Defiance. The project transformed a winding two-lane road into a generally straightened four-lane highway and included work on six bridges. Gerken Paving utilized reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), a sustainable paving method that conserves natural resources, reduces emissions and landfill waste, and extends pavement longevity. The company produced a high-quality asphalt pavement with exceptional surface smoothness.

SR-109 Project: Gerken Paving received an award for its work on 6.8 miles of SR-109 from US 20A/US 127 in Fulton, Ohio. The project involved repairing joints and other pavement repairs before planing 1.5 inches from the existing road and placing a 1.5-inch asphalt surface course. The asphalt mixtures incorporated reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), which conserves natural resources, decreases emissions, reduces landfill waste, and enhances pavement longevity. Conducted while maintaining traffic flow, Gerken Paving delivered a smooth, high-quality asphalt pavement.

Ohio Turnpike Resurfacing (MP 27.55 to MP 33.73): Gerken Paving won an award for resurfacing this section of the Ohio Turnpike, located in Fulton, Ohio. The work included repairing concrete joints, removing the existing asphalt pavement, and then placing a 13-inch base, a 1.75-inch asphalt course, and a 1.25-inch asphalt surface course. The project also used reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) for sustainability. Working at night, Gerken Paving successfully produced a smooth, durable, high-quality asphalt pavement that serves turnpike motorists well.

Ohio Turnpike Resurfacing (MP 43.00 to MP 46.50): In this project, Gerken Paving repaired concrete joints, planed the existing lanes, and placed asphalt leveling and surface courses. The asphalt mixes employed reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), in line with sustainable practices that conserve resources and reduce waste. This work was also performed at night, resulting in smooth, durable, high-quality asphalt pavement that benefits turnpike travelers.

Earning the Quality in Construction Award demonstrates that Gerken Paving met or exceeded NAPA’s rigorous standards.
