Increasing Safety Awareness
Safety is a priority for The Gerken Companies throughout the year, but April 2024 provided exceptional opportunities to promote awareness.
Each April, the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) sponsors its annual Watch For Us campaign to enlighten motorists about the perils of distracted driving in roadway work zones. The month also includes National Work Zone Awareness Week, which ran April 15-19. Hosted by the Maryland Department of Transportation, this year’s theme was “Work Zones are temporary. Actions behind the wheel can last forever.”
For its part, Gerken Companies took these opportunities to increase awareness about work zone safety. On Wednesday, April 17, Gerken employees wore orange apparel for Go Orange Day to honor families who lost loved ones in work zone accidents. Team members across the company submitted photos of themselves wearing orange, many of which appeared in a special video.
On Friday, April 19, team members observed a midday moment of silence in tribute to those who died in work zone incidents.
Gerken also posted awareness-creating messages on social media throughout the month and published a feature offering motorists advice for safely navigating roadway work zones.
