Inspiring the Next Generation of Employees

By partnering with local schools, providing internships, and organizing outreach events, The Gerken Companies is actively securing a skilled workforce to meet industry demands.

As we get ready for another road construction season, The Gerken Companies is working hard to find skilled workers to help ensure our success. With demand for quality road construction services on the rise, we know that hiring the right people is key to our success.

One of our main strategies for finding talent involves building connections with local schools. Our Talent Acquisition Manager, Hanna Myers, has been attending career fairs to meet enthusiastic students looking to start their careers. These events give us the chance to share information about job openings and the benefits of working with us. Hanna also reaches out to vocational schools, where students are learning skills related to our industry.

“By visiting these schools and conducting practice interviews, we not only provide valuable feedback to students but also identify potential candidates who align with our company values,” explains Hanna.

We proudly partner with organizations like the EHOVE Career Center, which provides essential training for both high school and adult students. These partnerships allow us to connect with motivated individuals ready to take on new challenges in road construction.

We actively promote internships and cooperative education opportunities, giving students the chance to gain hands-on experience while contributing meaningfully to our projects. Additionally, our work with Owens Community College’s CDL Training Program shows our dedication to supporting education that prepares students for careers in our field.

One highlight of our outreach efforts was the University of Toledo’s recent “Engineer for a Day” event, during which we welcomed 19 students from Liberty-Benton High School to our Kuhlman Corporation office. The engaging experience involved hands-on activities and provided insights into the engineering field from our experienced team members. Such events are invaluable for introducing students to the world of road construction and inspiring them to consider careers in engineering and related areas.

Through these activities and informative discussions about our work processes, students gained a comprehensive understanding of various aspects of our industry.

“We’re grateful to our presenters Jason Asmus, Robbie Jankowski, Andrew Marihugh, Stan Radabaugh, and Andrew Schwab for generously sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm with these young minds,” says Hanna.

As we prepare for the upcoming road construction season, our commitment to recruiting and developing talent is at an all-time high. The Gerken Companies believes that investing in the future workforce is crucial for the growth and sustainability of our industry. By fostering strong relationships with schools and providing meaningful opportunities, we aim to build a skilled workforce ready to meet future challenges.

If you know anyone who might be interested in joining our team, please encourage them to visit our Careers page for current job openings and internship opportunities.
